The latest Vanquish S prototype is making waves not just for its presence, but for a rear-end layout that features more piping than a pipe organ.

    This isn’t the first time this high-performance mule has been seen; it previously hit the Nürburgring in May. During that outing, observers noted a staggering number of exhaust outlets. This recent test vehicle continues that trend, featuring the standard quad-tip arrangement behind the rear wheels, a secondary pair integrated into the center diffuser area, and a third set positioned high up near the trunk line. While many of these are likely placeholders for testing various flow and back-pressure scenarios, the final selection remains a mystery.

    Engineering Challenges of High-Mounted Exhaust Systems

    Elevated exhaust exits are a hallmark of exotic performance, seen on various mid-engined models from Ferrari and McLaren. However, implementing such a design on a front-engined grand tourer like the Vanquish presents unique packaging hurdles. In a mid-engined car, the trunk is typically located at the front, away from the heat of the engine and exhaust.

    For the Vanquish, the cargo area sits directly above the rear axle. A high-mounted exhaust system would potentially compromise trunk volume to make room for heat shielding and internal plumbing. Furthermore, engineers must ensure that owners can access their luggage without the risk of heat exposure or getting road grime on their clothing from the recessed outlets.

    Beyond the exhaust intrigue, the Vanquish S prototype displays a more aggressive aerodynamic profile. Lower ride heights and revised bumper designs suggest a car focused on high-speed stability and cornering precision.     The heart of the beast remains a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12. While the base Vanquish produces a staggering 824 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, the S version is anticipated to reach 838 hp (850 PS). This puts it on par with the limited-run Valen, currently recognized as the most powerful front-engined production car. Unlike the Ferrari 12Cilindri, which focuses on a different style of engagement, the Aston Martin utilizes a refined eight-speed automatic transmission to deliver its immense power to the rear wheels.
