    Porsche Never Sold A Mid-Engined 911, So This Italian Shop Is Trying To Make One

    Most would agree that the Porsche 911 remains the world’s best sports car, so when small Italian firm Angelelli Automobili decided it wanted to build a car, it’s no surprise it selected the 911 as its base. The car, badged the Project 754, may look like a GT3 or GT3 RS with a body kit, but it promises to be much more than that.

    Two distinctive versions of the car will be produced, known as the 754 R and the 754 M. Like any other 911, the first of these retains a rear-engined layout, using either a 991-generation model or a 992-gen car as the base. By comparison, the 754 M will be mid-engined – a configuration Porsche itself hasn’t offered, if you discount the limited run GT1 homologation special.

    It appears work on the powertrains is still going, as the company says it’s still analyzing potential 4.075-liter and 4.11-liter flat-six engines, noting that it could develop custom air intakes, exhaust systems, and new cooling systems, in addition to ECU tunes. Power will vary between 700 and 800 horsepower depending on the configuration. Obviously, forced induction will be required to reach those figures.

    But it’s not the potential powertrains that are most exciting. Angelelli says it’s so committed to lightweighting that the Project 754 could weigh as little as 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs). To put that into perspective, a current 911 GT3 RS weighs roughly 1,450 kg (3,196 lbs). Helping to achieve the car’s low weight will be carbon fiber body panels and a heavy reliance on titanium and alloy 3D printing.

    Additionally, it appears the company is taking a leaf out of Czinger’s playbook, using generative AI technologies to find ways to minimize weight through its so-called ‘Alien Mesh Design,’ most obviously visible with parts like the lightweight, motorsport-inspired steering wheel.

    As for the exterior, it too will be distinct from the donor car, although it will still retain obvious 911 cues. Initial renderings of the Project 754 show it with large air intakes, swollen arches, new side intakes, and a wild rear diffuser and wing.

    Total production of the Project 754 could be capped to just 50 units. Of course, the project will have to get off the ground before this happens, which is no guarantee.
