A New Era of M: Clash of the M2 CS, M3 CSL, and M5 CS

The BMW M2 CS has made a striking entry into the fast car segment, establishing itself as a contender that evokes strong opinions. While its performance has garnered mixed reviews in Britain’s Best Driver’s Car shootout, its unique appeal cannot be overlooked.

History has shown that the M series often faces a fierce competition in this event, especially when influenced by environmental factors such as tire choice and unpredictable weather conditions.

It’s worth noting that had the judges experienced the M2 CS through various terrains—as I did on a long drive through the Lake District—the outcome might have favored it more positively. There’s undeniably more to the M2 CS than meets the eye, and it deserves another opportunity to showcase its capabilities.

In this evaluation, the M2 CS is joined by other notable models, giving us a chance to gauge how this latest offering measures up against the M-series legends. We’re equipped with ideal daylight on this winter’s day to appreciate the M2 CS, alongside a four-year-old BMW M5 CS and a classic 22-year-old BMW M3 CSL. Clearly, this isn’t just another day at the track.

The M5 CS stands out as a remarkable achievement within the BMW lineup, marking the first usage of the CS badge on an M5, while the M3 CSL is often celebrated as one of the most legendary M cars of all time. It competes directly with icons like the original M1 and the E9 CSL ‘Batmobile’ for the title of BMW’s most revered model.

For those fortunate enough to come across a £150,000 windfall, the choice lies between an elegant M3 CSL, a formidable M5 CS, or a fully loaded M2 CS—all while leaving enough for a garage to cherish these automotive masterpieces.
